Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is confident that Alexis Sanchez will overcome his slow start to the season.

The Chilean forward is yet to score in the Premier League during early stages of the current campaign, despite starting five of the Gunners' opening six fixtures.

Sanchez was the Gunners' stand out performer last term and ended the season as the club's top scorer with 16 goals in 35 appearances.

He is yet to produce similarly impressive displays since his return from the Copa America earlier this summer and Wenger has admitted that the forward's recent displays have been affected by his exploits at international level.

Sanchez helped Chile claim a first piece of major silverware on home soil at the expense of Argentina as recently as June and the French coach believes there are two key reasons behind the forward's stuttering start.

“I think I played him very early before he was completely fit, physically,” said Wenger. “That is one explanation.

"The second is that every player who has won a big trophy with the national team takes some while to settle and come back to his best.

"These are the two main explanations for me. Physically he is not completely ready, coming out of a big achievement and that takes time.”

Sanchez was used as a substitute during the midweek victory over Tottenham in the Capital One Cup but is expected to return to the starting line up for Saturday's trip to in-form Leicester City.

Claudio Ranieri's men are the last remaining unbeaten side in England's top tier and the Gunners travel to the King Power Staidum in the knowledge that victory would see them leapfrog their opponents in the table.
