Arsene Wenger says Arsenal plan to return for Thomas Lemar following a failed deadline day swoop.

The Gunners negotiated a club-record deal Lemar on the final day of the transfer window after Manchester City's late approach over Alexis Sanchez.

Wenger said for much of the window that Sanchez was not for sale, but the club's stance softened after City lodged an improved £60million bid in the final hours of Wednesday's window.

Arsenal scrambled to find a replacement and agreed a £92million transfer for Monaco's Lemar - a deal which included £17million in performance-related add-ons.

But the player opted against the switch to Emirates Stadium as he did not want to play Europa League football.

"€100m for Lemar? Yes all true, I wanted him," Wenger told Telefoot. "He decided to stay at Monaco, We will come back for him."

Wenger, who broke the club's record transfer fee signing Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon earlier in the window, also lodged a bid for Monaco's Kylian Mbappe during the summer.

But the Ligue 1 club knocked back Arsenal's bid and the teenager eventually sealed a loan move to PSG, who he will join permanently next summer.

Wenger added: "Mbappe could be (the next) Pele. There are no limits to how far he can go."
