Arsene Wenger has revealed how he held discussions with Pep Guardiola ahead of a proposed move to Arsenal during the Spaniard’s playing days.

The now Bayern Munich manager was plying his trade for Barcelona at the time, before eventually moving to Serie A side Brescia in 2001.

But Wenger has revealed how things could have turned out differently for the former Spain international.

"He wanted to play with me as a coach and he wanted to play for Arsenal,” Wenger told reporters.

"I met him at home - he was 30 or 31-years-old back then. I can’t really remember but he then went to Italy. I had players back then like [Patrick] Vieira and [Emmanuel] Petit who were still young.

"He showed great personality when we talked."

Arsenal take on Bayern Munich on Wednesday night in the hope of recording back-to-back wins over the Bundesliga side, after last month’s 2-0 victory at the Emirates.

The Gunners will be without Hecter Bellerin, however, who been ruled out of the game with a groin injury.
