Arsene Wenger says Arsenal future is 'not completely sorted' but he remains very clear over decision

Arsene Wenger has insisted he is clear in his mind over whether to stay on as Arsenal manager but admitted the situation is “not sorted completely”.

The 67-year-old’s future has been the subject of intense speculation with his current deal expiring at the end of the season and a growing number of Gunners supporters urging him to end his 21-year tenure at the club.

Arsenal face Manchester City on Sunday lying sixth in the Premier League table, six points behind fourth-placed Liverpool but it is understood Wenger is desperate to sign the two-year contract on offer.

Asked if he would reveal his plans, Wenger replied: “Not today but I’m very clear in my mind. But anyway, do I stay two months or two years? My commitment will be exactly the same. The time I spent here does not influence my attitude at all.

“I’ve always been very clear in my mind. I will remain like that. I think it’s a subject that at the moment is not sorted completely out.”

Pushed further on what needs to change for Wenger to publicly state his intentions, the Frenchman told Standard Sport: “Not a lot, just continue to ask the same question. One day I will answer!”

Alex Iwobi became the latest player to speak out in support of Wenger amid criticism of the team’s dreadful form, losing six of their last nine matches in all competitions including a 10-2 Champions League last 16 defeat to Bayern Munich.

“It’s very nice but I want the players to focus on their job,” added Wenger. “Their job is to perform and for me to help them to perform and to develop as players. That is, for me, what matters really.

“Especially in difficult periods, you need to see the difference of quality between people, with those who can focus on what really matters and what really matters at the moment is to stick tighter and show that we care about the end of our season, about this club and about our values that we stand up for.”
