Arthur Masuaku has issued an apology for spitting at Wigan's Nick Powell during West Ham's FA Cup exit on Saturday.

With the Hammers already 1-0 down, Masuaku aimed a spit at the former Manchester United midfielder which resulted in a straight red card from referee Chris Kavanagh.

The Football Association confirmed to Standard Sport that if Kavanagh should highlight the incident in his match report, then Masuaku will likely face a six-match ban.

David Moyes after the game said Masuaku would be punished by the club for his "despicable" actions, and the left-back has now vowed to make amends.

"I want to say sorry for my actions yesterday - I let down my team-mates, the manager, the coaches, board and the fans.

"I am very sad because the manager and coaches have put a lot of faith in my but I will work very hard to try and win that back.

"It was in the heat of the moment and out of character for me but I know it was totally unacceptable and I will learn for the first red card of my career."
