Australia coach Holger Osieck today apologised for saying “women should shut up in public”, insisting it was off the record and was a joke.

The German was taking his seat at a news conference following a 4-0 win over Jordan yesterday when he jokingly accused a male Football Australia official of ordering him around “like my wife.”

In television footage posted online, Osieck (above) then uttered the Latin phrase “Mulieres taceres in ecclesia”, adding his own English translation as “women should shut up in public”.

At a hastily convened press conference at Melbourne Airport today he said: “To everyone offended, I sincerely apologise.”

He then added: “If my wife knows, I’ll probably be in big trouble when I get home.”
