Barcelona have officially presented Ronald Koeman as their new head coach.

After days of speculation and negotiations between the LaLiga giants and the Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB), the 57-year-old was finally confirmed as Quique Setien's successor on a two-year contract earlier on Wednesday.

Koeman leaves his position as manager of the Dutch national team to return to Camp Nou, where he is revered after winning four consecutive LaLiga titles during a successful six-year stint as a player between 1989-95.

One of the key figures in Johan Cruyff's 'Dream Team', he memorably scored the winning goal in extra-time in Barcelona's maiden European Cup triumph against Sampdoria at the old Wembley Stadium in 1992.

Koeman is a vastly experienced coach, having taken the reins at multiple clubs including Ajax, Benfica, PSV Eindhoven, Valencia, Feyenoord and Southampton after initially serving as an assistant at Barca between 1998-2000.

His last club job was in the Premier League at Everton, where he was sacked after 17 months in charge in October 2017 with the club languishing in the relegation zone despite a high summer transfer spend.

Koeman - who underwent a heart procedure in Amsterdam in May after being taken to hospital with chest pains - then guided his native Netherlands to the final of the 2018-19 Uefa Nations League as well as qualification for Euro 2020, which was delayed by a year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He will now be tasked with changing the fortunes of a Barcelona team that lost their LaLiga crown to fierce rivals Real Madrid in 2019-20 and were humiliated 8-2 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals as well as being knocked out of the Copa del Rey at the last-eight stage.

It was the first time that the Blaugrana have finished the season without a single trophy since 2007/08, leading to the swift exits of Setien and technical director Eric Abidal and the bringing forward of next year's presidential elections.

Abidal has since been replaced by assistant Ramon Planes, who was present alongside Koeman and club president Josep Maria Bartomeu at Wednesday evening's unveiling.
