Quique Setien will be Barcelona's coach when the Champions League resumes next month, but the 61-year-old's future at Camp Nou remains uncertain.

The pressure was on Setien after last Thursday's 2-1 defeat at home to Osasuna and some incendiary quotes by Lionel Messi after the match as the Catalans lost out on the title to fierce rivals Real Madrid.

Messi said that 'many things would need to change' for Barca to have any chance of winning the Champions League, and even beating Napoli in the teams' last-16 second leg at Camp Nou on August 8.

But the Argentine attacker claimed there was 'nothing more to talk about' after Sunday's 5-0 victory at Alaves, which saw Barcelona end LaLiga on a more positive note.

Setien met with Messi ahead of the game for talks and also discussed his future with Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu after the defeat to Osasuna.

It was decided in that meeting that the coach would continue for now and, after the improved performance against Alaves, he will be in charge for the Champions League next month.

After that, however, it is unclear whether he will continue.

The former Real Betis coach signed a three-and-a-half year contract when he took over from Ernesto Valverde in January, but will see his job under threat if Barca fail to win the Champions League.

Barca have not finished a season empty-handed since 2007-08, when Frank Rijkaard left the club, and Gerardo 'Tata' Martino was sacked after he claimed only the Spanish Supercopa in 2013-14.

Setien took over mid-season, in difficult circumstances, but now only looks likely to be at Camp Nou for the 2020-21 campaign if he either wins the Champions League or at least shows signs of significant progress in the European competition.

If Barcelona overcome Napoli, the Catalans are likely to face Bayer Munich in the last eight, with the Bavarians 3-0 up in their tie against Chelsea following the first leg in London prior to lockdown.
