Gareth Barry refused to give up on Manchester City sneaking into the last 16 despite his manager Roberto Mancini claiming the club need a miracle to progress.

The Premier League champions are bottom of Group D after they were thumped 3-1 at Ajax.

Barry concedes City’s chances are slim but said: “The way the results have gone has made it tough but we have to try to win all three games and that would give us an outside chance.

“We would have 10 points, and that is all we can do. It’s a massive, massive task but we have to try to do it. Dortmund winning [2-1 at home to Real] is the worst possible result. When you are beaten you are looking for a bit of help from elsewhere and it didn’t come.

“But we have to concentrate on ourselves rather than looking at other teams.

“There is an outside chance and it’s not over yet. You can’t just roll over when there are points available and we will give it our all to try to win all three games.”

City’s challenge resumes when they host Ajax in a fortnight followed by Real’s visit to the Etihad (November 21) and then the trip to Dortmund on December 4. Mancini said: “It is very difficult to qualify now. It would be a miracle.

“It is my fault. I didn’t prepare well for the game and I take the blame. I thought in one way and it was different.

“When you prepare in one way and it is a different game, it is difficult. We had more chances to score and in the Champions League you need to score.

“We got beat by a very good Ajax side. When we went one up they were probably the better team. In the second half we just crumbled once the second goal went in. I’m very disappointed.”

MONEY FOR NOTHING

City’s line-up cost £184m to assemble — Sergio Aguero moved for £38m — while the Ajax outfit was put together for a meagre £3.5m
