'Big names' want Scotland job

Turfed out: George Burley was sacked following Scotland's 3-0 friendly defeat by Wales

Gordon Smith claims there are some "big names" among the applicants for the Scotland manager's job.

The Scottish Football Association chief executive is leading the search for a successor to George Burley, who has sacked following the 3-0 friendly defeat by Wales last month.

Former Parma boss Nevio Scala has announced his interest in the job and Smith believes the high standard of candidates would surprise some fans.

"I think there are a few of them who come into that category who are actually big names in the game," Smith said.

"There is no question that there are people who are known to the public and have had great careers, some of them as players and managers.

"It's very impressive in terms of the names that are there, people we've been told about.

"We're looking at it and some people will be disappointed obviously, if they don't get considered, but we've got a job to do and we have to find the right person.

"There are a number of people who I think offer the right credentials, so it's not one in particular."

Smith, speaking at a Bank of Scotland Soccer One event to celebrate the creation of 1000 youth teams, added: "We have not started the interview process at all, we're still looking at the names and we'll be developing a shortlist along the way, but we're on schedule."
