Premier League clubs are on course to set a new record for gross transfer spending this summer, according to Deloitte’s analysis.

The majority of Europe's major divisions closed their respective windows late last night but clubs in England's top tier still have several hours left to conduct any outstanding business.

Plenty of deals are set to be completed before Tuesday's 6pm deadline including Anthony Martial's £36m move from Monaco to Manchester United, which is expected to make the 19-year-old the most expensive teenager in history.

At present the accumulative fees that have been paid by Premier League clubs is marginally short of last summer's record of £835m and the expected increase in spending has been described as a direct result of the competition's newly negotiated broadcast deal.

“Last year we saw £85m of spending on deadline day and with further business expected over the coming hours, it looks set to be another record summer of spending for the Premier League," said Alex Thorpe, Senior Manager in the Sports Business Group.

“With the other European transfer windows having closed last night, the Premier League is again confirmed as the leading league in terms of transfer spending this summer.

“This level of spending continues to be driven in large part by the increases in domestic and overseas broadcast revenue in recent years.”

The Premier League's record net transfer spend - the amount that flows to clubs in the Football League and overseas - is also in line to be surpassed.

The figure currently stands at £400m but will be exceeded if - as expected - a flurry of late business is finalised.
