Bitter Darren Bent claims 'there is a lot of politics at Tottenham'

Fresh start: Darren Bent is pleased to be linking up with Steve Bruce at Sunderland

Darren Bent fired a parting shot at Tottenham today but didn't resort to swearing to get his message across this time.

The new Sunderland striker is delighted to have ended his two-year stay at Spurs, which culminated in a fine of two weeks wages after he spelled out his frustration over delays in the £10million move on his Twitter page.

The England international now believes his expletive-filled rant paid off and said: "In the long run it seems like it has done but at the same time I was disappointed at the way it came out.

"Normally we tend to keep our mouths shut and everybody does the talking around us. I just wanted to come to Sunderland. I am delighted to be here and I can't wait to move forward."

Bent was Spurs' top scorer last season with 17 goals but was not a first choice for Harry Redknapp, who blasted the striker for missing a simple chance against Portsmouth in January, insisting his wife would have scored it.

The 25-year-old claims he has already noticed the atmosphere at his new club is better than at his old one.

Bent said: "There is a lot of politics at Tottenham, but that's Tottenham as a club. I'm a Sunderland player now and it seems a lot more relaxed here.

"I want to get back to enjoying my football, I've had to grow up a lot in the last two years as a footballer and a person and I'm raring to go this season.

"I think Steve Bruce is a fantastic manager, when I knew he was interested in me it just helped the drive for the move to come about."

Redknapp dismissed Bent's criticisms of the club. The manager said: "I don't think he needs to be critical of the boardroom at Tottenham.

"He doesn't need to get involved - it's none of his business and I don't think he knows what happens in the boardroom here anyway.

"Darren is a good player and I had no problems with him while he was here. He's got his big move now and he just has to move on."

The total cost of the transfer could rise to £16.5m, the same price Spurs paid Charlton for him in 2006.

The extra payments depend on whether he scores more than 10 goals each season of his four-year contract, whether they win trophies or qualify for Europe as well as England caps.

Spurs are on the verge of reinvesting the money straight away as they are understood to have agreed an £8m fee with Newcastle for defender Sebastien Bassong.

Redknapp is desperate to strengthen his backline due to injuries to Ledley King, Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Dawson.

The boss said: "The chairman is talking to Newcastle so it's in his hands. But we're hopeful - he's a player we like, he's young and has a good future in the game. If he says we have him, then I'll be delighted."

Bassong, 19, still has a two-game suspension carried over from last season to be served, so the club may wait till after Newcastle's opening match in the Championship against West Brom on Saturday to conclude the deal in order to get one of them out of the way.

The Cameroon international says he is leaving Newcastle in order to keep his World Cup dreams alive. He said: "It was not good for my career to be at a Championship club.

"I want to play in future World Cups and African Cup with Cameroon. That is made more difficult if you are not playing at the higher level."

New Spurs striker Peter Crouch believes that the club have the potential to push for a Champions League place.

The £9m signing from Portsmouth said today: "I believe this club is going forward and if anyone has the potential to break into the top four we have. This was the biggest club I spoke to and the one that is moving forward."

Redknapp has lost out on Klaas Jan Huntelaar after Real Madrid agreed to sell the striker to AC Milan for a fee, thought to be £13m.
