Brazil right-back Dani Alves has been ruled out of this summer's World Cup with a serious knee injury.

The Brazilian Football Confederation confirmed on Friday afternoon that the issue will make it "impossible to call Dani Alves for the period of preparation, friendlies and, consequently, the World Cup."

The 35-year-old was injured on Tuesday in the French Cup final while playing for winners Paris Saint-Germain, who beat Les Herbiers 2-0.

The injury will sideline Alves for at least three weeks, with the defender set to spend the rest of the summer recovering ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.

Brazil, who are in Group E, play their first game in Russia on June 17 against Switzerland. They then take on Costa Rica on June 22 before playing Serbia in Moscow.

Alves has played for Brazil in the last two World Cups and has 107 appearances for his national side since his 2006 debut.
