Brendan Rodgers to Leicester City: Foxes confirm appointment of former Celtic boss on three-year deal

George Flood26 February 2019

Leicester City have officially confirmed the appointment of Brendan Rodgers as their new manager.

The 46-year-old leaves Celtic to head to the King Power Stadium as a replacement for Claude Puel, who was sacked after 16 months in charge on Sunday following the heavy 4-1 Premier League defeat by Crystal Palace.

Celtic revealed in a statement released earlier on Tuesday morning that they had 'very reluctantly' granted Leicester permission to speak to Rodgers after the Northern Irishman indicated that it was an 'opportunity he wishes to investigate further'.

Talks progressed quickly and a three-year agreement between the parties until June 2022 has now been announced, with Rodgers set to take charge for the first time ahead of Sunday's clash with Watford at Vicarage Road.

First-team coaches Mike Stowell and Adam Sadler will be at the helm on Tuesday evening as Leicester, currently 12th in the top-flight and without a win in any competition since New Year's Day, try to arrest an alarming run of five losses in six league matches against Brighton in the East Midlands.

"I’m very privileged and honoured to be here as Leicester City manager and I’ll give my life to make the supporters proud of their club," said Rodgers, who will be in the stands against Brighton.

"Together, we’ll be stronger and I’m looking forward to working with the players, staff and supporters to make the right steps forward.”

Joining him at the King Power are assistant manager Chris Davies, fitness coach Glen Driscoll and first-team coach Kolo Toure.

Former Watford, Reading, Swansea and Liverpool boss Rodgers spent two-and-a-half years north of the border, winning a plethora of silverware including back-to-back trebles comprised of the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup.

He won the latter trophy again in December with victory over Aberdeen at Hampden Park and has Celtic well-positioned for a third successive treble, with the Bhoys eight points clear of Rangers in the league ahead of Wednesday's trip to Hearts and also set to face Hibernian in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup on Saturday.

Rodgers' departure has led to a temporary return to Celtic Park for former player and manager Neil Lennon, who left his role as Hibs manager last month and has been appointed until the end of the season.
