Brentford manager Dean Smith expects the club to pick up more windfalls in the future after the Bees earned £500,000 this week when former defender James Tarkowski made his England debut against Italy.

Tarkowski left Brentford for Burnley in 2016 in a £3million deal that included a payment once the centre-half made an international appearance and an additional £500,000 if he makes a competitive appearance for England in a major tournament or a qualifier.

The 25-year-old is pushing for a place in the England squad for the World Cup this summer after an impressive season at Burnley, giving Brentford hope that they could net the £1million bonus.

Smith, whose side face Sheffield United and Bristol City over the Easter weekend, said: “I think the finance part of the club are always happy when the tills are ticking over.

“That comes from long-term planning as well. We can maybe pick up money further along the line. It has happened with Tarks and it could happen with others.”
