Brentford are relaxed about suggestions their manager Dean Smith is a contender for the Aston Villa job.

Smith is third favourite with the bookmakers to replace Roberto Di Matteo although at this stage it is understood Brentford are not anticipating any approach for their 45-year-old manager.

Steve Bruce and David Wagner, the Huddersfield manager, are the frontrunners to take over at Villa Park.

Smith has done an impressive job since becoming Brentford manager last November and his reputation within the game is growing.

Born in the Midlands, he was a boyhood Aston Villa supporter and his father used to be a steward at Villa Park.

Smith was asked about the Villa job last week but refused to comment because Di Matteo was still in charge.

Di Matteo was sacked yesterday and Villa are thought be preparing their final shortlist this week, with owner Dr Tony Xia keen to fill the position as quickly as possible.

Smith is preparing his side, seventh in the Championship, for the big game away against Newcastle following the international break.
