Brentford captain Pontus Jansson has signed a one-year contract extension at the club.

The Swede was due to be out of contract at the end of the season but has penned a new deal to keep him in west London until the summer of 2023.

Jansson joined the Bees from Leeds in 2019 and led the club into the Premier League for the first time in their history thanks to last season’s play-off final victory over Swansea.

He has started every league game for Thomas Frank’s side so far this season, an ever-present in a defence that has been riddled with injuries.

“I am very pleased that Pontus has signed a new contract,” Frank said. “He has been a big part of the success we have had over the last three years. He has been important to our defensive improvement in the last three seasons.

“Pontus has done well for us in the Premier League, and we are all pleased that he will be with us next season. His leadership and communication in defensive situations and his positioning are very important for us.”
