Alexandre Lacazette came off the bench to earn Arsenal a 1-0 win over Brighton as Mikel Arteta’s side made it back-to-back wins in the Premier League.

The Frenchman slotted home within seconds of replacing Gabriel Martinelli after terrific work from Bukayo Saka to give the Gunners successive league wins for the first time since their first two games of the season.

Mikel Arteta made just one change to the side that had beaten Chelsea 3-1 on Boxing Day, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang returning to the starting XI in place of Lacazette.

Brighton were the better team in the first half as Arsenal failed to muster a single shot on target, but the home side were wasteful and forced Bernd Leno into only one meaningful save.

The Gunners improved markedly after the break and Aubameyang went close to opening the scoring at the end of a terrific move involving the young triumvirate of Saka, Martinelli and Emile Smith Rowe, only to be denied by a superb reflex stop from Robert Sanchez in the Brighton goal.

Martinelli then threatened with a sharp strike towards the top corner but it was the Brazilian’s replacement, Lacazette, who would make the telling contribution, crashing in a smart finish at the near-post after Saka’s turn and run had opened up the home defence.
