Brentford face an anxious wait to discover the severity of Bryan Mbeumo's injury.

The Cameroon forward limped out of Wednesday night's 2-1 away defeat by Brighton late in the first half, having earlier scored a penalty to put the Bees ahead after Vitaly Janelt was fouled by Jan Paul van Hecke.

The Seagulls quickly hit back through Pascal Gross and sealed a rousing comeback win after the break courtesy of teenage midfielder Jack Hinshelwood's first senior goal.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank has since confirmed that Mbeumo suffered an ankle problem and will need to be assessed ahead of Saturday's trip to face relegation battlers Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

"He twisted his ankle. We don't know exactly bad it is; we will assess him tomorrow," Frank said after the loss at the Amex.

"It's another one on the list but that happens; another player may now need to step up.

"But let's not get too carried away. Let's wait and see how good or bad it is."

Losing Mbeumo for any length of time would be a major blow for Brentford, who remain without England striker Ivan Toney until mid-January due to his eight-month ban from football.

Mbeumo has stepped up to shoulder the main attacking burden in Toney's absence, scoring seven goals and registering four assists across all competitions so far this term.

Brentford are beset by injury problems at present, with record signing Nathan Collins also sidelined along with Rico Henry, Aaron Hickey, Kevin Schade, Kristoffer Ajer, Mathias Jensen and Josh Dasilva.

Danish midfielder Christian Norgaard also missed the meeting with Brighton due to suspension after collecting his fifth yellow card of the season in last weekend's 3-1 win over Luton.
