Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal says the the growing sense of belief around Old Trafford will continue to rise 'when' his side beat Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

The bullish comments come after a string of successive victories for United, who maintained a 100 per cent domestic record in September and jumped to the top of the Premier League table with a comprehensive win over Sunderland last weekend.

Manchester City can leapfrog their neighbours with victory over Newcastle on Saturday, but Van Gaal is confident his side can remain at the league summit for the long term.

"You always have to believe in this," said Van Gaal.

"I think the balance in our selection is much better than last year, so I believe in that. But the most important thing is not only that I believe, but that the players are believing in that. When we win at Arsenal the belief will rise a lot."
