Callum Wilson has revealed he was congratulated by Alan Shearer following his England call-up — years after the former captain criticised his performances on Match of the Day.

Wilson, who has shone for Bournemouth this season, is hoping to make his international debut in Thursday’s friendly against the United States at Wembley, as manager Gareth Southgate seeks long-term competition for Harry Kane in attack.

Wilson has six Premier League goals this season and his contribution has been noticed by one of the greatest forwards in the history of the English game.

“When I first injured my cruciate knee ligament [in 2015] he texted me,” said Wilson. “He is a legend so to receive a text from him, I was a bit shocked at the time. Before the injury, he gave me a bit of stick on Match of the Day for a few missed chances and things like that but that’s what he’s there for. He has been very supportive.”

Wilson may have to be patient at Wembley as Wayne Rooney is guaranteed to play some part in the game. England’s leading all-time scorer with 53 goals has been recalled to the squad and will win his 120th and final cap — two years after his last one.

Rooney’s inclusion in the squad for the game has divided opinion but Wilson is more than happy to leave the stage to the former Manchester United and Everton man, who is now proving a big hit in the MLS for DC United.

Wilson said: “It is Wayne Rooney. He is here for a reason. He is here to play and I hope he will get his opportunity at some point for sure.

“It will be his last call-up. It is my first time in the squad so hopefully I am not just here for one time, I am looking to be here for many years so this opportunity for him is more important.”
