Cardiff City's relegation from the Premier League was confirmed on Saturday as a home defeat to Crystal Palace saw the Bluebirds slip out of the top flight.

Cardiff's fate means that the relegation battle has now been sealed, with the Bluebirds joining Fulham (19th) and Huddersfield Town (20th) in the second tier of English football for the 2019-20 campaign.

Neil Warnock's side headed into Saturday's Cardiff City Stadium clash needing to beat Palace to stand any chance of catching 17th-placed Brighton, but Wilfried Zaha's goal after 28 minutes left the Welsh club with an uphill struggle.

Cardiff were given brief hope as Martin Kelly scored an own goal three minutes after Zaha's opener to level the scores, but Palace were ahead again before the break as Michy Batshuayi punished some poor defending from the hosts.

Andros Townsend's 70th-minute goal effectively sealed Cardiff's fate, and despite a late consolation goal from Bobby De-Cordova Reid, the result means that the Bluebirds will be playing Championship football next season.

Palace's win was welcomed by Brighton, who have survived despite an alarming slump in form which has seen the Seagulls collect just two points since beating Huddersfield back on March 2.
