Carlo Ancelotti would be an "unbelievable" appointment for Everton but may not be the right fit for them or Arsenal, says Jamie Carragher.

The Italian is reportedly in advanced discussions with the Toffees about replacing Marco Silva as their next manager.

The former Chelsea coach, who has won 15 major honours in his career including the Premier League title in 2010 and two Champions League titles with AC Milan, has also been linked with the vacant position at Arsenal.

And Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports Monday Night Football, says he is "surprised" Ancelotti would take a role at Goodison Park with the club just three points above the drop-zone in 16th.

"I'm surprised that Carlo Ancelotti would take the Everton job," he said.

"For them to get a manager of the calibre of Ancelotti would be unbelievable for them. In Ancelotti you are getting someone who is right at the top of football.

"This is a man who Evertonians, if it comes off, can say has won more than Jurgen Klopp and has won Champions Leagues. It gives them something to buy into with that manager.

"Still, I can't change my view that whether it was Arsenal or Everton, I'm not sure he is the man for these types of jobs. I think that no matter how successful Ancelotti has been in the past he's never really had this type of job or certainly excelled in this type of role."

While Everton are locked in talks with the 60-year-old, Standard Sport understands Arsenal are have made an approach for Mikel Arteta to take the vacant job at the Emirates Stadium.

Carragher spoke about Arteta's potential task on Sunday: “There’s a lot of work to do, but this is a huge job and a huge club.

"He’s never managed before and he’s being talked about getting one of the biggest jobs, will Arsenal come round again.

“But there won’t be many bigger clubs than this that want Arteta, and if it is a toss up between Arsenal or Everton, Arsenal is the bigger club. He’s got more chance of being successful and playing Champions League football."
