Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti admitted his sadness after his side fell victim to arguably the biggest upset in Champions League history on Tuesday night.

The 13-time European Cup winners were huge favourites to brush aside Sheriff Tiraspol on home soil at the Bernabeu, but fell behind after 25 minutes courtesy of a header from Uzbek midfielder Jasurbek Yakhshiboev that beat Thibaut Courtois.

Madrid hit back after the interval through a Karim Benzema penalty after a foul on Vinicius Jr, but the minnows from the unrecognised breakaway state of Transnistria who play in the Moldovan league were not to be denied their historic shock as Luxembourg midfielder Sebastien Thill netted an 89th-minute winner to stun the home crowd.

The incredible result sees Sheriff - who were only founded in 1997 - top Group D after they also overcame Shakhtar Donetsk on their Champions League debut, while shellshocked Madrid are three points behind having beat Inter Milan on opening night.

"I'm a little sad as I think we deserved to win," Ancelotti said after Tuesday’s upset.

"You could say we had bad luck, we lost the game on the small details, they scored their goals on the counter-attack and from a throw-in. We had a lot of shots at goal but sometimes luck deserts you in games.

"Everything went well for them, everything went wrong for us."

Madrid midfielder Casemiro lamented: "We had so many shots, their goalkeeper made a lot of saves and I think you have to congratulate them for scoring two goals.

“We were in control of the game, had many chances and then they scored a wonder goal."
