Celebrate the Premier League return with these historic photos of the beautiful game

Premier League football is back this weekend after what seems like an all-too-short summer break.

With further modern innovations being introduced to the Beautiful Games and after a transfer window which has, once again, seen record-breaking fees paid, a fan could be excused for feeling nostalgic for years gone by.

That's where photographer Stuart Roy Clarke comes in. He has been documenting football since 1989 after being prompted by disasters such was Heysel and Hillsbrough.

'I am in love with the game, the show, and all it is about - this exhibition will highlight the things I love about it," he said.

"There are millions of pieces and stories to the game, more than the events which take place on the pitch.'

Clarke's work has been on show across multiple venues since the turn of the century and a full exhibition is available to view at the National Football Museum until March 2019.

The exhibition will continue to evolve throughout its 12-month residency, highlighting and ever-changing face of the sport, both in England and north of the border in Scotland.
