Charlton boss Jose Riga will learn his fate within days

Uncertain future: Duchatelet is considering other candidates.

Jose Riga’s future at Charlton will be decided this week, just two months after he joined the Championship club.

The 56-year-old will hold talks with owner Roland Duchatelet in Belgium and those meetings will determine whether he continues as manager. Riga’s future is uncertain because his contract expires this summer and Duchatelet is considering other candidates.

An announcement on any decision is likely to be delayed until next week.

Riga has hinted he wants to stay but he admitted earlier this month he does not know whether he will remain in charge next season. Duchatelet will decide whether to keep faith with the manager who guided Charlton to Championship safety after taking over in March with the club bottom of the table.

When asked about his future earlier this month, Riga said: “I know the football world. Today you are here and tomorrow you are somewhere else. I have normally stayed at my pervious clubs for more than one year.

“I was nervous thinking about the future because then you can miss thinking about the present. I have done my job, now we will see what happens the future.

“I enjoy the competition, the people, the players, the stadium and the fans. I had heard about the passion of the people here and I like England.”

Riga lifted Charlton out of the relegation zone with seven wins from their final 16 games and there is a desire among players and supporters for him to stay.

Duchatelet will have been impressed by the way he rejuvenated the club’s season but it remains to be seen whether that will be enough to earn him a new contract.

Charlton captain Johnnie Jackson wants Riga to stay, saying earlier this month: “He has been good since he came in. You can see the way he wants to play and he understands the Championship. If he was given time to implement his methods, we would have the making of a good side.”
