Interim Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink has backed club captain John Terry to become a "good manager" in the future.

The 35-year-old defender could leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season after he revealed the club have decided not to offer him a contract extension.

The former England skipper has been linked with a move abroad but could also make the move into management as Terry has already started his coaching badges with a view to taking up a seat in the dug out when he hangs up his boots.

Hiddink believes the centre back has the capacity has to succeed as a coach, but joked he does not want to appear to be ushering Terry towards the Blues exit.

"I think he can be a good manager but first they must make this in-between period where they give a structure and a foundation.

"I did that at home [making notes] not during training sessions, that would perhaps be a little offensive.

"I don’t want to talk to him [about being a manager] now because maybe he thinks I’m pushing him out!" said the Dutchman.

Hiddink's second spell at Chelsea is set to be as short lived as his first but the 69-year-old is hopeful he can pass some knowledge onto members of the Chelsea squad who are considering a managerial career.

"I hope the way I deal with groups and teams that they get something they can use in their career.

"That’s what I did as a young player. I looked to my coaches and even made a diary when I was a player and made notes of what I liked. I wrote a lot.

How Chelsea can replace John Terry in central defence

"The most thing I learnt from managers is things you should not do. You have to deal with your staff, the medical staff, the commercial side, you must manage all the people and sometimes managers can be rude to people like kit men.

"I respect all the staff. Sometimes I experience them getting rid of their frustration on other people who are different in the hierarchy," he insisted.

Chelsea are unbeaten in the Premier League under Hiddink and have a chance to record back-to-back victories for the first time this season when they travel to St. Mary's to face Southampton tomorrow.
