Chelsea captain John Terry has today denied that "player power" contributed to Jose Mourinho's sacking.

The Portuguese tactician was relieved of his duties at Stamford Bridge on Thursday afternoon after overseeing the club's worst start to a season since the 1978-79 campaign.

Mourinho claimed he had been "betrayed" by his players in the wake of Chelsea's defeat to Leicester while technical director Michael Emenalo believes that a "palpable discord between manager and players" led to the 52-year-old's exit.

But Terry has refuted suggestions that senior Chelsea players had any part in Mourinho's dismissal and remains adamant that he and the squad are solely focused on what happens on the pitch.

The Blues are just one point above the relegation zone ahead of this afternoon's fixture against Sunderland.

Mourinho's representatives have released a statement indicating that the Portuguese will not take a sabbatical from the game, which has heightened speculation that the former Chelsea boss could return to management imminently
