Chelsea fans should have shown Jose Mourinho 'the respect he merits', says Ray Wilkins

Ray Wilkins wishes Chelsea fans showed "a little bit more class" toward former manager Jose Mourinho on Monday night, saying the supporters who jeered the Manchester United boss failed to give him the respect he deserves.

Mourinho made his second return to Stamford Bridge since being sacked by Chelsea for United's FA Cup quarter-final tie on Monday night, but received a hostile reception by a section of the home supporters during the first half.

The Portuguese coach, now in charge of United, responded by holding up three fingers to signify the number of Premier League titles he won at Chelsea during his two stints in charge of the west London side.

After the game, which Chelsea won 1-0 to book their place in the FA Cup semi-finals against Tottenham, Mourinho insisted he will remain the number one manager in the club's history until someone else comes along and beats his trophy haul.

Wilkins agrees with Mourinho, and admitted he was disappointed to see some Chelsea fans react negatively to the 54-year-old.

"I just wish our Chelsea supporters, and I'm a Chelsea supporter, showed a little bit more class to Jose Mourinho," Wilkins told Premier League Daily.

"People will naturally be thinking: 'Hang on a second he was demonstrating stuff on the touchline against Chelsea'. Well yes he was but now he's employed by Manchester United. Chelsea relieved him of his post.

"If we actually remember what he's done for our club, and I say our club because I've been a Chelsea man since I was 10 and a half, he's worked miracles there.

"He's a good bloke but he's a football man, he wants his club to win. I just thought the other night against Manchester United they didn't show him the respect he merits.

"Jose will be number one until somebody wins as many trophies as Jose."

Things came to a head between Mourinho and new Chelsea manager Antonio Conte during the game after the latter reacted furiously to Antonio Valencia's foul on Marcos Alonso near the touchline.

Conte and Mourinho had to be separated by the fourth official and then told to calm down by referee Michael Oliver before the United boss later said he has "nothing to say" to the Chelsea manager.

When asked if Mourinho should have shown more respect to Conte, Wilkins said: "When you've got two coaches on the sideline that have so much passion then you're going to have a little [confrontation].

"You could have said Conte was disrespectful to Jose. It was just a conflict of interests, they just had a row and these things happen."
