Chelsea have been boosted by the return to training of Kai Havertz and Thiago Silva, raising hopes they could be ready for Saturday’s Premier League game at Southampton.

Centre-half Silva has been missing since pulling up with a thigh injury in the 1-0 win at Tottenham on February 4, while fellow summer signing Havertz has missed the last four matches with a knock.

In Silva’s absence, Andreas Christensen has performed well in the heart of Thomas Tuchel’s three-man defence so the Brazilian may not be rushed back at St. Mary’s, although his experience could be invaluable in next Tuesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg against Atletico Madrid.

Tuchel earlier this week said of Silva’s injury: “We are aiming for Southampton, we are trying, trying hard. Let's see if he can make it, we cannot promise."

Tuchel is set to be without Tammy Abraham for both matches after the striker was forced off in Monday’s win over Newcastle with an ankle problem, although a scan revealed the injury is not as bad as first feared.
