Timo Werner has revealed that he suffered a dead leg while winning the penalty that secured Chelsea another three points against Sheffield United.
Werner was brought down by Aaron Ramsdale for the second-half spot-kick that Jorginho converted to give the Blues their third straight victory under Thomas Tuchel.
The £47.5million striker asked Tuchel to be taken off in the closing stages and had heavy strapping on his left thigh.
Werner impressed in the win at Bramall Lane and Chelsea will be hoping he is fit to face Barnsley in the FA Cup on Thursday and then Newcastle in the Premier League on February 15.
Werner told Sky Sports: “It was the penalty. A dead leg, I think you call it. The 10-15 minutes after was hard so I told the manager he should take me off because it was a tight game and it is better to have 11 fit players on the pitch than 10-and-a-half.”
Werner admitted he is desperate to end his personal drought after being involved in both Chelsea goals against Sheffield United.
The German has now scored only once in his last 19 games and said: “It was a good win for us. It was very difficult the whole game against a very good Sheffield United defending high. For myself, again no goal but it is good to see that I can help the team with other things at the moment. I keep going.
“I am happy when we win. When I can make two assists like today it is also good but as a striker you want to score. It is a long time now for me, the longest in my career. You have to keep going and the goals will come.”
