Chelsea player ratings vs West Ham: Edouard Mendy unusually shaky in costly loss as Mason Mount shines

Chelsea are likely to be replaced at the Premier League summit after slipping to a costly defeat against West Ham on Saturday.

Arthur Masuaku’s bizarre late goal secured a memorable London derby comeback for the Hammers, who had fallen behind twice courtesy of Thiago Silva’s header and Mason Mount’s superb volley either side of a Manuel Lanzini penalty, only for Jarrod Bowen to strike after the break.

The defeat means Chelsea remain just one point clear at the top of the table, with fellow contenders Manchester City and Liverpool in action later on Saturday against Watford and Wolves respectively.

Edouard Mendy 4

Twice had the chance to clear Jorginho’s backpass before panicking and bringing down Jarrod Bowen in the area. Unusually shaky from him and wrong-footed for Masuaku’s winner.

Andreas Christensen 5

Looked as vulnerable as he has for some time in the face of West Ham’s breaks at speed. A physically testing afternoon.

Thiago Silva 7

The hero at both ends – heading Chelsea in front and then coming to their rescue when clearing off the line moments later.

Still had his own wobbles – with an uncharacteristically loose pass letting in Bowen for an early chance.

Antonio Rudiger 6

Did not stamp his authority on the match in the face of the physical challenge posed by West Ham. Slack pass at the end of a promising second-half break wasted a good chance for Chelsea to extend their lead at 2-1.

Reece James 6

More reserved than usual. Did not look to get beyond West Ham’s defence often enough, possibly out of respect for their threat on the break.

Jorginho 6

Mendy should have done better when dealing with his backpass – but it was still under-hit and put Chelsea in unnecessary trouble.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek 7

One of Chelsea’s better performers – getting up in support in attack and putting in some important interceptions defensively.

Marcos Alonso 5

Too weak under pressure from Vladimir Coufal in the build-up to Bowen’s equaliser. Offered little going forward.

Hakim Ziyech 6

His cross set up Mount’s goal, but did not do enough from an attacking perspective other than that. Chelsea’s service from wide areas was lacking.

Kai Havertz 6

Looked bright while he was on the pitch and his ankle injury will be a concern. Should have done better with a first-half header that was too close to Lukasz Fabianski.

Mason Mount 8

Scored one and made one – and was in general the main tormentor of West Ham. He is Chelsea’s lucky charm – but not on this occasion.

Subs

Romelu Lukaku (Havertz, 46) 4

Another frustrating outing for the Belgian. Chelsea have got to find a way to use him more effectively. Given next to no service.

Callum Hudson-Odoi (Ziyech, 63) 4

Brought on as Tuchel went in search of a winner, but could not find a way through West Ham’s defence.

Christian Pulisic (Alonso, 73) 4

Provided the energy you would expect – but never looked like making anything happen up front.

Not used: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Sarr, Barkley, Saul, Werner
