Ajax have failed in a bid to sign Chelsea's £9m summer signing Marco van Ginkel on loan.

The Dutch club wanted the Dutch international as a replacement for Christian Eriksen, who is on the verge of joining Tottenham.

Van Ginkel has yet to start a game for Chelsea this season, which has already caused concern in his camp because he is desperate to earn a place in Holland's squad for the World Cup next year.

Mourinho assured the 20-year-old he would play regularly when transfer negotiations took place last month, but he wasn't even in the squad for the goal-less draw against Manchester United on Monday.

Ajax hoped to capitalise on the situation, but Chelsea have rejected their offer.
