Former Chelsea captain John Terry has denied any role in a deal to sign Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish.

The 22-year-old is widely expected to leave the Villa Park before the transfer deadline on Thursday and Chelsea and Tottenham are reportedly battling for his signature.

The Blues legend, who played alongside Grealish while at the Championship club, was reportedly encouraging his former club to sign the highly-rated playmaker.

But in a comment on an Aston Villa Instagram post, Terry insisted he had not been involved in "any conversations" regarding the midfielder and Chelsea.

He wrote: "Just to clarify I haven't had any conversations with Chelsea regarding Jack, we all know he is good enough to play in the Premier League but we all want to see him do that with @avfcofficial."

Tottenham remain at the front of the queue to sign the England Under-21 international. However, manager Steve Bruce revealed the north London club's offer is currently "nowhere near" Aston Villa's valuation.

Terry, meanwhile, is out without a club after leaving Aston Villa and has been linked with a pundit role at Sky Sports.
