Chelsea passed a test of character which others have failed at Burnley, says Pat Nevin

Antonio Conte's Chelsea side proved their mettle in the Premier League title race with a 1-1 draw at Burnley, according to former Blues winger Pat Nevin.

Burnley boasted the third-best home record heading into last Sunday's clash with league leaders at Turf Moor, but Pedro opened the scoring early on for the visitors.

Chelsea battled to protect their lead in snowy conditions - with David Luiz carrying a knee injury for the entire game - but Robbie Brady's fine free-kick earned Sean Dyche's Clarets a deserved point.

Manchester City's 2-0 win at Bournemouth on Monday night cut Chelsea's lead at the top of the table to eight points, but Nevin says that the Blues' ability to pick up a draw at one of the top flight's toughest grounds speaks volumes about Conte's players.

"If ever there was an afternoon to test Chelsea’s character and any apparent southern softness, Sunday was the day," Nevin wrote on Chelsea's official website.

"It was only a point gained in the end and it probably should have been three on the balance of play, but there certainly wasn’t a lack of application and will by the Blues.

"David Luiz, more than most, showed a willingness to grind it out in those conditions even though he was clearly carrying a fairly debilitating injury.

"It is also particularly hard to be creative when most of the elements are conspiring against you but the players rolled their sleeves up (metaphorically at least) and just got on with it.

"This was always going to be a tough fixture as Burnley’s home form underlined, but it had to be faced.

"Many have wilted in the face of this onslaught but Chelsea and the hard core fans that turned up in blue never faltered.

"It was two points dropped but a test that was passed which others have failed."
