Borussia Monchengladbach would be willing to break their club record to sign on-loan defender Andreas Christensen on a permanent basis despite Chelsea’s reluctance to sell him.

The 20-year-old Danish defender has attracted interest from the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich but Standard Sport reported in April that Chelsea were keen for Christensen to join up with the first team squad when he returns from a two-year loan next summer.

However Gladbach have other ideas and are eager to ensure that Christensen, voted fan’s player of the season ahead of Arsenal signing Granit Xhaka earlier this month, remains at Borussia Park.

Though there is no agreed purchase option between Chelsea and the Bundesliga side to bring in Christensen director of football Max Eberl has revealed that Gladbach would be willing to spend big to keep hold of Christensen beyond the end of next season.

“In the case of Christensen we are ready to make a record transfer,” Eberl told Bild. “We know that a player with his quality does not come cheap.”

Gladbach’s current record signing is World Cup winner Christoph Kramer, brought in for £11.5million earlier this summer to replace Xhaka and West Ham-bound Havard Nordtveit.

Christensen made four appearances for Chelsea in the 2014-15 season, receiving a Premier League winners medal despite appearing in only one game.
