Standard Sport assesses the individual performances from a dramatic night at Stamford Bridge, as Chelsea clashed with PSG for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals.

PSG advanced to the quarter-finals of the Champions League on away goals after the game finished 2-2 on the night but 3-3.

Thiago Silva’s excellent looping header won the tie after Eden Hazard scored from the penalty spot in extra-time which cancelled out earlier goals from David Luiz and Gary Cahill.

The game had threatened to be overshadowed by two incidents in first half when Zlatan Ibrahimovic was sent off for a two-footed challenge on Oscar and referee Bjorn Kuipers didn’t award a Chelsea penalty after it looked as though Diego Costa had been tripped by Edinson Cavani.

Despite having the extra player on the pitch, Jose Mourinho’s side failed to breakthrough a well organised PSG defence.

And it was Laurent Blanc’s side who seemed most likely to take the lead when Cavani rounded Thibaut Courtois but the winger could only watch agonisingly as his left-footed effort rattled against the post and rolled away.

With ten minutes left, Ramires found himself one-on-one with Salvatore Sirigu inside the six-yard box of the PSG penalty area but the midfielder couldn’t curl his shot past the goalkeeper’s left post.

The Blues’ pressure was unrelenting, though. And with nine minutes of the 90 to play Cahill smashed past Sirigu after Costa had swung and missed his effort.

The tie was sent into extra-time just four minutes later when Luiz headed past Courtois following Ezequiel Lavezzi’s corner.

Chelsea fans thought they would be advancing to the quarter-finals when Hazard scored from the penalty spot after Silva had handled the ball on 96 minutes.

Any hope Chelsea fans might have had of progressing in the tournament was dashed six minutes before time when Silva jumped elegantly and looped his header over Courtois who had saved excellently from the Brazilian defender seconds earlier.
