Eight years ago today, Chelsea reached the promised land and lifted the Champions League trophy for the first time in the club's history.

Didier Drogba and Petr Cech were the heroes for the Blues in Munich, with penalties playing a massive role as interim manager Roberto Di Matteo pulled off a shock result against Bayern.

Chelsea were weakened by suspensions to captain John Terry and Ramires, while Bayern were playing on their home turf at the Allianz Arena.

The pressure was on Bayern, and it showed. With just two minutes left on the clock, Drogba's late header cancelled out Thomas Muller's effort to send the game into extra-time.

Drogba almost went from hero to villain as he conceded an extra-time penalty, but Cech saved Arjen Robben's spot-kick - and the game went to a penalty shootout.

Juan Mata missed Chelsea's first effort, but Cech saved from Ivica Olic and Bastian Schweinsteiger to allow Drogba the chance to win it.

And was there ever any doubt? Drogba sent Manuel Neuer the wrong way to send the travelling Chelsea fans into ecstasy, with the Blues lifting the European Cup for the first time ever.

A dejected Bayern side got their reward a year later as they won the competition in London, but this night will always belong to Chelsea.
