Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri hopes his side can put their season back on the right track after dragging London rivals Tottenham into a battle for the top four.

Pedro's second half goal looked enough to secure all three points against third-placed Spurs, before Kieran Trippier's own goal sealed the result and diverted Tottenham attention from a title race to the battle for Champions League places.

After a flying start to the season, during which they themselves were briefly considered title contenders, Chelsea's fortunes have taken a nose dive, losing six of their last 12 in all competitions before Wednesday night's meeting.

Things came to a head at Wembley in Sunday's EFL Cup final when Sarri looked to lose all authority, goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga defying his manager's decision to try and substitute the Spaniard.

After returning to winning ways, and completing an unbeaten home run against top six rivals for the season, Sarri hoped, just as defeat to Tottenham at Wembley sparked their downturn, this could mark another turning point in the season.

"We hope so. The most important thing is that we need consistency in performances and in results," Sarri said.

"As you know very well, in this championship, it's so difficult. It's not easy. In the last month we played two or three times against Tottenham, once against Man City, once against Man United.

"It's not easy to have consistency of results. But now we need points.

"It was really very important tonight because we are fighting for the top four. I don't know but, maybe, with this result we can involve Tottenham in this battle. The gap is very large, seven points, but maybe. It's not easy, of course."

He added: "The result was very important because the fans saw the team able to fight. For the relationship with the fans, it was really a very important match. I am the coach. I think about my team. What is important now is consistency.

"To fight for ten matches in a row. Maybe we are not able to win ten matches in a row, but we'll be able to fight."

That fight must continue in another London derby against Fulham, just down the road, on Sunday afternoon.
