Tottenham are weighing up whether to match Chelsea’s bid for long-term target Ross Barkley.

The Blues made the first move for the England midfielder with an offered thought to be in the region of £25million, which was rejected by Everton, though the clubs remain in talks.

It now remains to be seen what Tottenham’s next move will be. Barkley has been a target for the club since last winter and is highly regarded by Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, who is convinced he can unlock the 23-year-old’s obvious potential.

But any club buying Barkley will know that they will not be able to count on him immediately, as the player has a hamstring injury and it is unclear when he will be able to return, though this has not deterred Chelsea at this stage. Barkley is also out of contract at Goodison Park next summer.

Spurs are inching closer to completing a deal for Argentina Under-20 defender Juan Foyth, who was believed to be in London on Wednesday.

Foyth, 19, looked more likely to join Paris Saint-Germain earlier in the transfer window but he was desperate to work with Mauricio Pochettino and that proved decisive in the final reckoning. Foyth is likely to take the place in the squad of Kevin Wimmer, who was sold to Stoke for £18m yesterday.

Tottenham have also agreed the framework of a deal for a £23million deal to sign Serge Aurier from PSG, with a five-year contract for the 24-year-old right-back, but they are yet to hear whether he will be cleared to make the switch.

The Home Office were due to decide whether to grant the Ivory Coast international a UK work visa, which has been in doubt because of a conviction for assaulting a police officer last year. Aurier maintains his innocence and has appealed.

Spurs will also listen to offers for fringe players before the window closes, though Moussa Sissoko - a £30m signing from Newcastle last summer - has claimed on social media that he will not be leaving the club this month. Vincent Janssen and Georges-Kevin Nkoudou, both of whom were signed last summer, have also attracted interest from elsewhere, with Janssen admitting that his lack of playing time is far from ideal. Janssen said: “Nobody is ever happy with this, because everyone wants to play, but this is the situation. Am I staying? I don’t want to say too much about it at the moment.
