Chris Powell ready to utilise his fringe benefits

Marco Giacomelli11 April 2012

Chris Powell will rotate his squad for Charlton's Carling Cup tie at home to Preston tonight after a much-changed side shocked Reading in the last round.

The team which knocked out the Championship club featured a trio of debutants - Ben Hamer, Ruben Bover Izquierdo and Cedric Evina - and three players making their first starts in Danny Green, Bradley Pritchard and Andy Hughes.

That has given Powell the confidence to switch his XI again for the second-round tie with the fellow League One side.

The Charlton manager said: "I have to look after my squad and keep an eye on any fringe players to make sure they get games.

"Obviously, I don't want [their manager] Phil Brown to know exactly what I'm doing but I've got confidence in my squad.

"So if I do make a lot of changes, I'm confident the boys will give their all.

"Reading were more experienced than us but the players took on board everything I said to them the day before and played well."
