Christian Eriksen will be fitted with a “heart starter” after collapsing on the pitch last weekend during Denmark’s match with Finland.

Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest shortly before half-time and received CPR on the pitch at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, while a defibrillator was also used on him.

The former Tottenham midfielder is currently recovering in hospital, where he will watch Denmark’s game with Belgium today, and it was confirmed this morning he will be fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD).

The device, which the Danish FA described as a “heart starter”, sends electrical pulses to regulate abnormal heart rhythms, especially those that could be dangerous and cause a cardiac arrest.

The decision has been taken to fit Eriksen with one after the national team’s doctor, Morten Boesen, consulted with heart specialists both in Denmark and from around the world.

“After Christian has been through different heart examinations it has been decided that he should have an ICD (heart starter). This device is necessary after a cardiac after due to rhythm disturbances,” the Danish FA said in a statement this morning.

“Christian has accepted the solution and the plan has moreover been confirmed by specialists nationally and internationally who all recommend the same treatment.

“We encourage everybody to give Christian and his family peace and privacy the following time.”
