Crystal Palace have confirmed defender is in hospital recovering from injuries sustained in a car accident on Sunday.

Souare was airlifted to hospital after being trapped in his £120,000 Mercedes G63 for about an hour after it collided with another car on the M4 near Heathrow.

London’s Air Ambulance flew the Senegal international defender to the Royal London Hospital’s major trauma unit in Whitechapel with injuries to his jaw and thigh.

Souare, 26, who did not play at the weekend, was released from the vehicle by firefighters following the collision between junctions four and three at about 12.10pm yesterday.

Pictures posted on social media showed his black sports utility vehicle alongside the central reservation on the London-bound carriageway, with the air ambulance nearby. His condition was said not to be life-threatening. A London Air Ambulance spokeswoman said: “Following treatment, [the patient] was transported to a major trauma hospital by air.” Police said no arrests had been made and appealed for witnesses.

It is believed both cars were heading east when the collision occurred. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured. London Fire Brigade said in a statement today: “Crews used specialist cutting equipment to free the trapped man and he was removed to hospital by London Air Ambulance. Five fire engines and a fire and rescue unit from Feltham, Hayes and Heathrow fire stations attended.”

Souare joined Crystal Palace in February last year from Lille and became a regular, starting 32 games last season. He has played three times this season but missed Saturday’s 2-1 victory away at Middlesbrough.

A Crystal Palace spokesman said: "Crystal Palace Football Club regret to confirm that Pape Souare was yesterday (Sunday) involved in a car accident and taken to hospital in London.

"The player has sustained injuries to his thigh and jaw bone and will remain in hospital whilst he receives treatment.

"The club are liaising closely with the hospital on his progress and we obviously wish him a speedy recovery. Our thoughts are with Pape and his family at this time."

Witnesses are asked to contact 020 8543 5157.
