It is now four Premier League games without a goal for Crystal Palace, and this defeat showed how much they are missing Yannick Bolasie.

Palace have failed to find the net in the League without Bolasie since the winger injured his hip against Stoke three weeks go. They were slow and unimaginative going forward against Aston Villa, and sorely missed his spark.

Bolasie was instrumental for Palace before he was injured and despite his absence he is still the club’s second top scorer in the League this term, with four goals.

Palace managed just one shot on target last night and failed to win a corner — against a side that has been in turmoil this campaign.

A mistake from Wayne Hennessey gifted Villa their first League win since the opening day. The goalkeeper fumbled Joleon Lescott’s header through his legs, but James McArthur says it would be wrong to blame the defeat on a player who has done so well this season. “Wayne has made the mistake, but we did not deserve to get anything from the game,” he said. “They were better in every department and deserved their win. “Wayne has made one mistake since he has been in goal. We will be getting behind him.”
