Crystal Palace manager Frank de Boer doesn’t understand the Premier League and was a risky appointment by the club, according to former chairman and owner Simon Jordan.

The Dutchman, who took over at Selhurst Park after Sam Allardyce’s surprise resignation at the end of last season, was on the wrong end of a 3-0 hiding against Huddersfield on his competitive managerial debut for the Eagles last weekend, and will look to make amends away at Liverpool on Saturday afternoon.

The former Ajax and Inter Milan boss has not held back in his overhaul in south London, with his side looking less than comfortable in his 3-4-3 system last weekend, and Jordan is concerned it may never work.

"Palace are in a [difficult] position because they're in between cultures," he told Sky Sports.

"They had Sam who created the DNA of them being hard to beat, and then De Boer comes along with a hybrid of [experience in] Eredivisie and a bit of Italian.

“But you can't hang this man for one game, the fans have got to stop being fans and start being supporters. They've got to get behind him until there's nothing to support. One bad game isn't going to define him.

"I think this is dangerous territory for Palace. They've had established managers in [Tony] Pulis, [Alan] Pardew and ultimately Sam, but this is a departure from their DNA.

"This is an incumbent chairman wanting to play expansive football and it possibly might be the way for them to go forward but, right now, have they got the players for it?

"The Premier League is very different from a pre-season friendly tournament, De Boer is going to get schooled very quickly, and he's either going to thrive or not survive.

"Palace in my view are a 12th or 13th-placed club. But you've got a manager that does not understand the culture of the Premier League and what comes with it, and that's the risk he has to face."

De Boer, who lasted just three months in his last post at the San Siro, will be hoping that striker Christian Benteke can keep up his form against his old club, having scored twice in a win at Anfield late last season.
