Crystal Palace hope to complete the signing of Patrick van Aanholt from Sunderland this week.

Palace are close to agreeing a deal thought to be worth an initial £9million for the left-back.

Selhurst Park boss Sam Allardyce has made the position a priority and Sunderland are prepared to sell to their relegation rivals.

Palace had a £7m bid rejected earlier this month but have returned with an improved offer that could reach £12m after add-ons.

Allardyce knows Van Aanholt from his time in charge at Sunderland and the 26-year-old Dutch defender was a key part of the team that avoided relegation under Big Sam last season. Van Aanholt, who joined Sunderland from Chelsea £1.5m in 2014, has been a regular this season but manager David Moyes is willing to sell because he needs to raise funds for his own transfer targets.

Sunderland signed defender Joleon Lescott on a free transfer today, paving the way for Van Aanholt’s exit.
