Roy Hodgson: I don't have magic wand to get Crystal Palace scoring goals

1/30

Roy Hodgson says there is not magic wand he can wave to get Crystal Palace scoring following their 1-0 defeat to newly promoted Sheffield United.

The Blades, playing their first Premier League game at Bramall Lane in 12 years, were sharper and smarter in every aspect while Palace lacked defensive solidity and attacking spark.

Following a 0-0 draw against Everton on the opening day of the season Palace are yet to score this term, with Wilfried Zaha yet to hit full fitness and attacking transfer targets missed over the summer.

Before Sunday's game Hodgson had called on his players to prove their attacking talent but when asked how to address the problem, Hodgson said: "Do the same as you always do, working at your game, keep making sure the movements are right, that you are giving people chance to practise their movements.

"There is no magic wand. We have played 180 minutes and haven’t scored a goal, conceding one. I believe there are players in the team who are capable of scoring goals. As a coach all you can do is show your faith in the player but it is always the player’s job to get out on the field and perform."

James McCarthy was introduced for his Crystal Palace debut in the second half and was quickly involved in a row with George Baldock after a dangerous tackle from the Sheffield United right-back. Baldock was booked for his challenge while McCarthy, who missed more than a year of football thanks to a leg break at Everton, was cautioned for his reaction.

"My only regret and complaint is having seen McCarthy’s ankle after a very nasty challenge got him a yellow card," Hodgson said. "I find it hard to understand. I have got no criticism of the referee’s performance."

Palace face a trip to Manchester United next.
