Daniel Sturridge is set for new deal at Chelsea

11 April 2012

Chelsea will reward striker Daniel Sturridge for his impressive form this season with a new long-term contract.

Sturridge has starred for the club under manager Andre Villas-Boas and is expected to win his first England cap in the friendly against Spain on Saturday.

The 22-year-old's deal expires at the end of next season but Standard Sport understands negotiations have already begun over an extension which will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2016.

The striker is on £60,000 a week but it is believed Chelsea are willing to pay him up to £90,000 a week.

Sturridge started only 10 games under former coach Carlo Ancelotti and was sent out on loan to Bolton last season, where he scored eight goals in 12 games.

But Villas-Boas has used the striker much more regularly and he has repaid the faith in him by netting five times in nine starts, even though he has mainly played on the right flank.

Such is the impact he has made, Villas-Boas picked him ahead of £50million hitman Fernando Torres in the lone striker role for the 1-0 win at Blackburn last Saturday.

And England boss Fabio Capello has also been impressed with his performances, naming the forward in the senior squad for the first time on Sunday.
