Tottenham full back Danny Rose has described Mauricio Pochettino as a "father figure" and believes the Argentine's influence is a key factor behind his good form.

Rose was facing an uncertain future when Pochettino took charge at White Hart Lane in 2014, having struggled for consistency after returning to north London following a loan spell at Sunderland.

But the 26-year-old was buoyed by positive discussions with Pochettino and has subsequently seen off competition from Ben Davies to establish himself as a key member of Tottenham's defence.

Rose is adamant Pochettino has had a huge impact on his career and is hopeful the 44-year-old will stay in north London for years to come.

“He’s been like a father figure to myself and a lot of the players here," Rose told Tottenham's official website.

"I owe the manager and his staff a lot of praise and I hope I can continue like this during this season.

“Mauricio is a joy to work with and I’m thankful Tottenham have got him here, got him to sign a new contract and now I hope he’ll see out those five years and even more.

“I’ve learned a lot, the fans can see I’ve tried to improve and I give everything when I play. That is largely down to the manager and his staff,” he added.

Rose's improved performances for Spurs have also seen him recognised at international level and he is set to start England's opening 2018 World Cup qualifier on Sunday night.

The full back is one of several Spurs players to have forced their way into the international fold of late and believes he is indebted to Pochettino for the upturn in fortunes he has enjoyed.

"One of the first things he said was if I entered into his philosophy, he would make me into an England player, so he’s been true to his word.

“A lot of hard work has gone in, a lot of patience from the manager as well.

"Not everything has been great, he’s had to put up with a lot of mistakes I’ve made but he’s always stuck by me," he added.
