Arsenal have confirmed that Danny Welbeck suffered a 'significant right ankle injury' in Thursday night's 0-0 draw with Sporting, and said that the England forward remains in hospital.

Welbeck was stretchered off in the first half of the Europa League fixture after receiving lengthy treatment and oxygen on the field.

The 27-year-old's Gunners teammates looked visibly distressed, and no close-up television replays were shown during BT Sport's coverage, though images on social media appeared to reveal the severity of the injury.

The exact nature of the injury has not yet been confirmed but the club say they expect to issue a further update within the next 72 hours.

Full-back Stephan Lichtsteiner was also forced off in the game and is being assessed ahead of Sunday's Premier League meeting with Wolves, as is fellow defender Nacho Monreal, who has not played since the 5-1 win over Fulham a month ago.

Laurent Koscielny’s integration into full training is ongoing, while Egyptian midfielder Mohamed Elneny will return to full training next week.
